Shared Classroom Rules, Procedures
& Expectations for Seventh Grade
(Students will not be allowed to return to their locker once class has begun.)
have permission to speak; avoid distracting other students.
Talking out without permission will not be tolerated.
(Do not write in textbooks/library books, on tables/desks/counters etc…).
Items will be confiscated and parents will need to come to school to have electronic items
returned.
Also note that certain other behaviors are expected and there are consequences for inappropriate behaviors: Homework is expected to be turned in on time or a score of zero will be given. Assignments not turned in on time should still be turned in even though late, but no points/credit will be given and your grade will be lowered. If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to find out what was missed and complete the work – your teacher will tell you when the work is due. Work assigned the day of an unexcused absence will result in a zero, so parents are expected to call in and inform the office that their child will be out of school.
Students are requested not to sit on the tables or desks and by now students are expected to know how to sit in a chair in an appropriate manner – facing in the correct direction, no slouching, and feet on the floor. Tipping is a safety issue and strongly discouraged; students may lose the privilege of sitting in the chair if they choose not to sit in the chair correctly. Sleeping in class is not acceptable behavior and the student may be referred to the nurse or a phone call home made.
Students should remain seated during the class period unless they have permission to do otherwise. Running, shouting, pushing, and fighting are unacceptable behaviors and will be responded to accordingly. Papers to be thrown away should be disposed of in the wastebasket at the end of class – don’t leave paper in your desk or try to throw it in the trash from your seat.
Letter/note writing is strongly discouraged—also includes reading and passing notes/notebooks. The writing of behavior specific statements is sometimes used to alter this student behavior as well as other inappropriate behaviors.
Students should wait for the teacher to dismiss class – the bell does not dismiss the class.
Students
(and parents) should know the dress code (see the student handbook for
specific guidelines) and parents should encourage their child to follow
the dress code and help reduce the distraction and disruption to the
learning environment inappropriate attire sometimes causes. Students
may be asked to change clothes and parents may be called if a student
is inappropriately attired. It is the responsibility of the parent to
be informed of the dress code and help their child choose appropriate
clothing.
No Gum or candy is allowed in the classroom or hallways. Chewing gum in class is often considered a disruption (it is also a housekeeping issue because students rarely use the trash can to dispose of their gum) and students who continue this behavior may receive a referral after two warnings in a semester and / or be subject to the teacher’s CMP.
Students are encouraged to be on time for class. Tardy students will be asked to stand for most teachers and a referral or step may be given to those students who are tardy more than twice a semester.
Students are encouraged to do their own work – cheating is unacceptable and will not be tolerated; cheating will result in a zero for those involved and the STUDENTS will call home.
Restroom use requires a passport. Students should carry their passport with them to class and plan to use the restroom before first hour class, during the passing periods, and at lunch.
Students are encouraged to purchase and use the Assignment Book /Student Handbook and write their name in ink in the space provided as soon as possible; J.T. teachers will periodically check the notebook for completeness and accuracy.
Students should not let others borrow their assignment notebook for any reason.
Students should have a clearly marked folder for each subject and keep a record of their grade on their score sheet when requested by the classroom teacher.
Lined notebook paper (8 ½ x 11) is needed for every class! A supply of loose leaf note book paper, or non-spiral bound notebook paper (micro-perforated is acceptable) is needed to begin the year and should be replenished as the year progresses. Students are expected to include the appropriate heading on every paper they turn in for a grade. Papers with no name or incomplete headings may not be graded by the teacher or a loss of points may result.
We request that students use only pens with black ink and/or pencils for homework.
Pens with blue or red ink may be used for grading.
Students will be asked to do a reasonable amount of homework in all classes.
Be prepared to spend about 30 minutes per core class per night on homework. If there is no assignment given by the teacher, we expect parents to suggest the student review material for an upcoming test or re-read sections that may have been difficult for the student.
If your child rarely brings home books or homework, please contact us because they may not be turning in their assignments.
Most teachers will speak with the student when inappropriate behaviors are displayed, and it is usually after several conversations with the student (and the behavior still exists) that a teacher will make a phone call home to the parent. We use a step referral process at the junior high as part of our classroom management plan (an example of the referral form is found in the student handbook).
These are the steps to be taken by the teacher as shown on the Referral or Removal Form:
Step 1. Verbal warning
Step 2. Parent letter/phone call
Step 3. Parent contact attempted
Step 4. Referred to Principal / In School Suspension
Step 5. Suspension
Grades
and Other Important Information
Midterm
progress reports and report cards are sent home each quarter and have
attached to them a sign-off sheet to let teachers and office personnel
know the parent / guardian has viewed and discussed the student’s
grades. The sign-off sheet is a record that contact has been made with
the parent / guardian. Using the comment section on the sign-offs a
way for the parent / guardian to communicate with the junior high staff
by– we do read these try to respond accordingly in a timely manner.
Grade

The
grading scale for the junior high is as follows:

Jimmie
Time Grading
Jimmie Time is a state-mandated advisor-advisee time for which there is an established curriculum and procedure; it is not necessarily a graded class and does not average into the students GPA. Some teachers choose to base JT grades on the following:
For every three X’s earned in the grade book, the student will receive a whole letter grade deduction ( A to B, B to C). By signing the signature sheet, parents and students understand that students will have JT every day for the entire year and these “strikes” will determine the student’s grade each grading period . Students will receive an “X” in the grade book each time any of the following situations occur:
Specific Information from Mrs. Simon, math
There are a few items I want to make you aware of so you may play an active role in your child's math progress.
All students will need their own calculator for math class. A simple scientific calculator is all that is necessary. Please mark calculators with name before bringing to school.
You will need to bring to class every day the following items: pencils, 1 -3 subject spiral bound notebook, loose leaf paper, 2 pocket folder, math book & workbook, accelerated reading book and assignment book.
You will keep notes and assignments for every chapter to be turned in at the end of the chapter.
All work in math class will be done in pencil or it will not be accepted.
Pens may be used for grading only.
Daily assignments are worth 5 points.
All make-up work due to absence will be graded for understanding, not for a grade.
Not following directions on assignments will result in a zero for that assignment.
You must have at least half of your assignment completed or it will receive a zero.
Parent contact will be attempted after the third missed assignment
Proper, respectful behavior is expected. If a period of unacceptable behavior occurs, parents will be notified.
Students will be shown their grade every Friday. Ask them how they are doing.
Specific Information from Mr. Schwartz, math
Each student will be expected to do the following:
1. Listen to everyone in the class.
Each student will be given/required to do the following:
Attendance/Late Work Policy:
Required Classroom Supplies for Every Class:
Specific
Information from Mrs.
Eaton, social studies
You are expected to bring the following items with you to class every day:
Make sure your homework is finished before the bell rings; homework not finished is considered an incomplete assignment and results in a zero. Keep in mind that even two zeros can affect your grade. The best policy is to get your work done on time!
I request students turn in
all work (including tests and quizzes) with the following heading:
First Name Last Name Example: Jamie Eaton
Month date, year August 22, 2007
Hour 1st hour
Forgetting any of the three
lines of information will result in loss of points for the assignment.
Specific
Information from Mr.
Toombs, industrial
technology
In order to have a successful classroom environment, all students must follow the classroom rules.
I also request students not to change any of the classroom equipment—for example: do not change the settings on the computer. If a student does not follow the classroom rules, he/she can expect the following consequences as set forth on the Referral /Removal form currently in use.
1. Verbal warning
2. Parent letter/phone call
3. Parent contact
4. Referred to Principal / ISS
5. Suspension
If there is a severe disruption
by a student (fighting, insubordination etc…), the student will be
sent immediately to the office.
Specific
Information from Mr.
Fougerousse, science
I consider disruptions to class to include but not be limited to the following:
I may make several attempts
to discuss the inappropriate behavior with the student before I initiate
the step process, but students who continually display inappropriate
behavior / disrupt class will receive a step on the referral form.
Homework is due on time.
Upon the third missed assignment
in a nine week period your grade will be lowered on the grading scale
one step—every missed assignment after that will lower it another
step
Specific Information from Mr. Horein, science
Tardy students will stand for
20 minutes in the back of the room the first time and for the entire
class period if there is a second tardy. Upon the third tardy the student
will be referred to ISS.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to see that your work is made up. You will be given one day for each day you are absent to make up your work. If the absence is unexcused NO MAKEUP
WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED and you will receive a zero on all homework, quizzes, and tests missed that day. DO NOT plan to do your make up work out in the hall on the day you return from your absence. Students who have absences in excess of the 10 days allowed will receive NO credit for work completed after the 10th absence. If you are absent because of a planned or prior known reason, then your assignments must be turned in BEFORE your absence and any test or quizzes must be made up the day you return. If you are absent for only part of the day and miss science class, it is your responsibility to find out what was assigned and to have the assignment completed the next day.
HOMEWORK counts as 25% of your total grade; failure to complete your homework could result in up to a two letter grade reduction! Homework will be checked on a daily basis, however, grades will only be recorded four or five times during the chapter. This means you must be responsible to KEEP
all your papers even after
they have been graded until we have completed the chapter.
GRADING of homework will done
in class because of the large class size. You may never grade your own
papers. Always trade with the person sitting behind you and always sign
your name to the paper you grade.
GRADES: Your grade is made up of the following:
Test
= 50%
Quizzes = 30%
Homework = 20%
Specific Information from Mr. Horein, science
Laboratory

pay for any broken equipment.
2. All broken glass is to be
placed in a special container –not in the trash can.
3. Do not let chemicals, especially
acids, come in contact with your body or clothing. Treat all chemicals
with extra care.
4. Always wear the protective eye glasses and apron when working with any
type
of chemical.
5. Never smell, feel, or taste
any chemicals unless instructed to do so.
6. Never mix chemicals or any
substances on your own!
7. Never take chemicals or equipment from the supply table to your lab table.
Never

8. Stay at your assigned lab
table –do not go visiting!
9. Never touch the emergency shower or eye wash unless there is a real emergency where a chemical has accidentally spilled on you. Activating
either
of these will get you an automatic 3 day suspension!
10. Pay attention to the time so you will have time to clean up before the bell
rings—passes will not be
given out to be late to your next class.
11. Clean up your own work area at the end of the period. Be sure to wash and dry
any equipment you may have used and put it back where you got it. Be sure to
put
all paper towels and trash in the trash cans and not in the sinks!
Specific
Information from Mrs.
Roberts, reading
Language Arts / reading is
a 90 minute class that meets every other day. Your child may seem a
bit overwhelmed by this aspect of the class, but we work on many skills
and the time will begin to move rather quickly once students become
comfortable with the rotation.
the end of the day the assignment is due
I do not hesitate to have a student call his/her parent if school or classroom rules are ignored.
I do not tolerate rude, inconsiderate or disruptive behavior from any student because I believe students have been taught better at home. I will discuss the inappropriate behavior with the student before I initiate the step process, but students who continue to behave inappropriately will receive a step on the Referral or Removal form.
Severely disruptive or non-compliant students may be removed from class immediately.
I’m looking forward to a
great year working with you and your child.
Specific
Information from Mr.
Carter, writing
Along with reading, Language
Arts / writing serves as the other component of English. It also
is a 90 minute class. Any great piece of writing (no matter how
big or small) is developed from a process of many revisions. Good
writing is not a one-time event. Throughout the year, I will teach
your son or daughter how to use many different writing techniques to
communicate various thoughts in the most powerful and effective ways.
This, combined with a strong grammar base and a practice of the various
purposes of writing, will give your child the tools necessary to communicate
both efficiently and effectively.
the end of the due date
I have found it very effective to use many different methods to teach particular concepts, but the foundation is always, “Do what I say.” Classroom rules will always remain the same, and specific procedures for a given project may be given if necessary. However, any student who does not follow the rules can expect me to use the following process:
1. Verbal warning
2. Parent letter/phone call
3. Parent contact
4. Referred to Principal / ISS
5. Suspension
If a student severely disrupts
the class (fighting, insubordination etc…), I will send him or her
immediately to the office.
I am looking forward to a great
year!
Specific Information from Mrs. Fougerousse,
family & consumer sciences
In a class with this much freedom,
students must act responsibly.
You are encouraged to write your assignment in your assignment book each day.
All class work is to be done in black ink or pencil.
You should bring a notebook
and pencil or pen (black ink only) to class every day.
It is important for students to be to class on time and have their homework turned in on time.
Upon the third missing assignment
and those that follow, the student’s grade will be lowered one letter
grade.
If you have a question, raise
your hand –do not walk up to me.
Sit correctly in your chair,
not on the floor or on the tables.
Have your hair pulled back from your face for cooking labs.
Wear closed toed shoes for
cooking labs. (No sandals or flip-flops.)
Clean up after yourself.
Demonstrate appropriate and
positive etiquette.
Passports are required for
restroom use; carry yours with you to class.
Repeated verbal and physical
disruptions result with the student being given in-room seating away
from the other students. This repeated disruptive behavior prevents
the class from learning, prevents the teacher from teaching, and prevents
the disruptive student from learning.
I respond to classroom disruptions as follows:
During the nine weeks – rule infraction is written on student file page (note to myself)
Re-entry slip may be given to student to evaluate his/her disruption
and for him/her to plan how not to repeat the disruption.
Informal talk with student
Seat change
Student is last to leave class
Official talk with student
Letter to parents
Phone call home
Referred to Principal/ISS
Parent conference with administrator/Suspension

Specific
Information from Miss
Miller, resource
room
I am delighted that your child
is in my class this year. With your encouragement, your child will participate
in and enjoy many exciting and rewarding experiences this year. Your
child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his
/her growth. I know that together we can make a difference is this process.
I have developed a classroom discipline plan which helps every student
to make good decisions about his/her behavior. I follow the general
seventh grade rules, but I include positive recognition for appropriate
behavior as well as consequences for inappropriate behavior.
Missing Assignments: Daily I ask for assignments and remind students what assignments I do not have from them. However, sometimes a student will not turn in an assignment. I will accept one late assignment for credit, but I will deduct 10% of the grade for that assignment (may only be one day late). For a second late or missing assignment, the student will receive a zero and a warning.
For a third late or missing assignment, the student will receive a zero and a warning.
If there is a fourth late or
missing assignment, the student will receive a zero and I will start
the Referral or Removal and Feedback Form.
Tardies:
To be on time in my classroom you must be in your seat when the bell
rings, with ALL materials needed for class. The first and second tardies
in my class will result in a verbal warning, but upon the third tardy
the student will receive a day in In-school suspension.
Cheating: Cheating means copying from someone else’s homework or test, or letting someone copy from your homework or test. Also, doing someone else’s work for them is considered cheating.
1st time cheating—a zero on the assignment and I will start the Referral or Removal and
Feedback Form.
Math Class:
Students who have me for math
must have a pencil at all times and will also need a calculator.
