DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES

In order for the educational process to be effective and enjoyable for all children, it is essential that an orderly and safe atmosphere be maintained at school. Along with academic skills, children need to learn to work well in a group, conform to acceptable standards of behavior and develop self discipline. The purpose of discipline is to teach appropriate behavior. Realizing the same type of discipline does not work equally well with all children, different measures need to be taken with individual children. Each classroom teacher has a classroom management plan of which the students are made aware the first day of school. Expectations, rules and regulations are made known to students as well as consequences for unacceptable behavior. Measures which may be used to try to correct inappropriate behavior include, but are not limited to:

  1. Warning
  2. Individual counseling with teacher
  3. Loss of privileges
  4. Individual improvement plan (contract)
  5. Temporary isolation
  6. Parent-teacher conference
  7. Student-principal conference
  8. Student-teacher-principal conference
  9. Parent-teacher-student-principal conference
  10. Suspension (In-school or out of school)
  11. Expulsion
  12. Restitution
  13. Corporal Punishment
  14. Other reasonable measures as the teacher or principal may deem necessary.

Inappropriate behaviors in which one or more of the above mentioned corrective measures may be used include, but are not limited to:

  1. Insubordination, defiant attitude, disruption of class
  2. Chewing gum
  3. Running in the classroom or halls
  4. Fighting, threats, harassment
  5. Obscenity
  6. Profanity
  7. Lying
  8. Cheating
  9. Stealing
  10. Improper attire
  11. Cafeteria disruption
  12. Possessing or setting off firecrackers or other explosives
  13. Using tobacco (Continued)
  14. Possessing or using alcohol, drugs, or any substance represented by the provider to be an illegal drug (automatic expulsion)
  15. Attending school under the influence of alcohol or drugs (automatic expulsion)
  16. Intentional vandalism
  17. Possession of smoking materials
  18. Infraction of riding the school bus rules
  19. Causing physical harm to another person
  20. Possessing or using weapons (knives, blades, guns, etc.)
Your help as parents is needed in teaching your children to respect and follow school rules, policies, and procedures. The staff will strive to inform parents of any problems children may be experiencing before they become serious.

Thank you for your support.

STUDENT DUE PROCESS

A student who violates school rules consistently, or in such a manner as to jeopardize the safety of themselves or others and /or cause disruptions such that a class cannot successfully be taught will be a candidate for suspension.

Before a child is suspended he/she will be granted an informal hearing at which time a written or oral statement of charges will be made, along with a summary of the evidence against the student. The student will then be given an opportunity to explain his/her conduct. If a student is suspended, his/her parents or guardian will be notified orally or by letter stating the charges and the length of suspension.

EXPULSION

A student may be expelled from Baugo schools for misconduct that violates a validly adopted rule or one of statutory nature. The process is as follows:

  1. 1. A student may be suspended pending the Superintendent's initial determination.
  2. 2. If the Superintendent concurs, a hearing officer will be appointed to hear all the evidence in the case.
  3. The parents or guardian of the student will be sent a notice of the rights of the hearing along with a summary of all evidence against the student.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

Public Law 150 Acts of 1980, effective August 1, 1980 require immunization of all children in a school corporation. Under the recently revised Indiana Code 20-8.1-7-9.5 the following immunizations are required as a prerequisite to entering school.
